Tower Transmission Line

The Introduction

KASOA is a busy and vibrant township community located approximately 30km west of the capital of Ghana, Accra. Positioned at a crossroad on the Cape Coast – Accra Road there is a busy market atmosphere and a population residency in excess of 42,000 people.
Over recent years the prolific growth of the town combined with the resident’s increase in personal wealth and access to electricity has created ever increasing power demands and a strain to the existing infrastructure thus resulting in frequent power outages to the community of Kasoa.

The Brief

As a solution to this problem the Electricity Board of Ghana acted and decided to resolve by ceding some of the load at the existing Kasoa Switching Station to the much larger Winneba ‘bulk supply point’ Primary Substation. However, to implement this solution ECG it would require a new transmission line to be constructed from Winneba to Kasoa consisting of; 30km of line with over 200 steel towers in concrete foundations; approximately 190km of 400AAC conductor and 24km of 33kV underground cable.
ECG through a Commercial Tender invited companies with proven expertise in this type of work to ‘bid’ for this work of which Luton Engineering Services were successful because of their skill and expertise in providing totally pre-financed 'turn key' solutions to electrical power distribution installations.

The Solution

Luton Engineering provided and managed the whole process from the initial planning of the route through to the commissioning of the project including;
  • Route Planning and 'Spotting' - Including land survey and tower spotting.
  • Tower Design and Test – Including the mechanical design of towers, the testing of the structural load to the client, ECG's approval.
  • Civil Engineering – Foundations built to suit the specific sub-tropical environmental conditions.
  • Tower Construction – Towers constructed by qualified technicians.
  • Conductor Installation – Conductors and ancillary equipment installed by experienced and qualified technicians.
  • Pre-commissioning – Methodical pre-commissioning methods prior to the supply of power.
  • Commissioning – Testing and certification of the power to ensure all of the client's requirements were satisfied and approved.

The Results

Luton Engineering Services successfully designed and constructed the new transmission line on time and to budget providing the people of Kasoa a new essential piece of infrastructure investment. This investment combined with other investments being enacted by the client ECG, will help to provide a more consistent and reliable power supply for industry, commerce and the residents of Kasoa.
